The Honorable Dr. Emad Kandil is Chief of General, Endocrine and Oncological Surgery, Professor of Surgery, and Elias Hanna Foundation Chair in Surgery at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA. He is also an executive member of the Tulane Cancer Executive Council and Director of the Clinical Endocrine Surgery Fellowship at Tulane. Dr. Kandil is a fellow of the prestigious American Surgical Association and a member of the Southern Surgical Association. He is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. He serves on several national and international committees as well as being part of their executive leadership teams, including the Chair of General Medical Faculty.
Dr. Kandil earned the MD degree at Cairo University School of Medicine in 1997. Following his graduation, he pursued his surgical residency at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences Center in New York and completed prestigious research fellowships at Downstate and NYU before relocating to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine for a clinical fellowship in surgical endocrinology and oncology. He joined the faculty at Tulane shortly after.
He has a special interest in robotic endocrine surgery and has the largest experience in the country with robotic thyroid and parathyroid surgery. Indeed, he is the first physician in the USA to perform 150+ thyroid radiofrequency ablations (RFAs). In 2017, Dr. Kandil received the Shipley Award from the Southern Surgical Association, making him the third Tulane faculty member to receive the award since its inception. He consistently accrues satisfied patients with each encounter, as attested by his numerous patient testimonials.
His research interests have focused on clinical outcome research related to endocrine surgery. His laboratory research focus is on the identification of novel genetic markers and examining the anti-tumor efficacy of multiple pathways targeting thyroid cancer using in vitro and mouse-model cell in addition to human specimens.
Dr. Kandil has written 300+ original articles, invited reviews, and book chapters and serves on numerous editorial boards. He has lectured all over the world on topics related to endocrine surgery and is widely sought out for many podcasts and interviews in this discipline. In his 15+ years at Tulane, he has mentored a countless number of physicians and scientists who are currently distributed nationwide. Dr. Kandil is the program director of an annual course on thyroid and parathyroid surgery, a renowned program that is now in its 13th year.
